Coaching for Writer's and Creative Block
I offer psychotherapy and coaching services to adult and young adult students, artists, writers, professionals and those who use creativity for self-expression. In the role of coach, I assess your writing and research challenges and recommend immediate steps for becoming more productive. Coaching is different from psychotherapy (see sidebar, below), which addresses psychological factors that may contribute to writer’s or creative block. It also differs from the assessment and treatment of learning disorders.
I teach the mechanics of researching source material, generating creative ideas and forming them into finished text. If our initial session reveals possible or diagnosed learning disabilities, I may refer you for specialized help. Some who have already received that help can benefit from my coaching service, which addresses the following issues:
Writing Challenges
- Getting started
- Organizing your ideas
- Writing in English as a second language
- Believing the first draft must be a finished product
- At home with intuitive knowing, but feeling constrained by language
- Other issues, unique to you
Computer Research Skills
- How to quickly find information on your computer or the Internet without knowing where it’s stored
- Using an electronic dictionary to quickly understand difficult material
- Creating lively text by finding just the right word with an electronic thesaurus
- Using spreadsheet software to sort and categorize complex information
My Background
Before I became a psychologist, I enjoyed an award-winning career as a marketing writer, editor and communications consultant. I taught classes in proposal writing and have coached fellow students in writing their doctoral dissertations. I was also one of the first students in my doctoral class to finish my dissertation. I researched and wrote a polished 350-page dissertation in less than two years.
Making Contact
The list of possible issues on this page is by no means complete. If yours is one I haven't covered, call me at 415.271.2350 to discuss its possible treatment and resolution. There's no charge for the phone call and the initial session is at half-price, if we decide to meet. All initial appointments are arranged through a brief phone call so I can get a general sense of the issues you're addressing. I also ask questions to make sure that your needs are likely to fit within my scope of practice (areas of training and expertise). If those issues are outside my scope of practice, instead of meeting, I try to offer referrals to therapists or community resources with the appropriate specialization. 24-hour notice is required to reschedule the no-charge visit once only. I welcome people of any race, religion, or sexual preference. If you want to know more about my fees and third-party payment policies, select this link.
